Joni just received the #gershwinprize- music’s highest honor-at the @librarycongress. I can’t tell you how precious this night was. It represents what I love about the power of legacy. Beloved teachers and their students who some day may become teachers to new students and on and on…the ripples seem and unseen. Worship at the altar of Music- watching every vessel take on its own shape and color and form… telling the human story in all its tragic beauty and wonder. Joni is singular. She has shaped most every artist I know in some way. At a very low point in my 20s I was introduced to her records and I found the Earth again. I learned that intimate offerings of truth can save someone- and sometimes that person is you. She is cheeky and irreverent and wise and funny and doesn’t suffer fools and has ushered through more truth to this plane of existence than most. Congratulations Joni- you are a goddess and deserve every good thing. I also am so moved by the way that Brandi loves her fiercely, with generosity and true admiration. Brandi put me next to Joni in this picture because she knew it meant a lot to me and I grabbed her arm to say thank you and they took this photo and so here we are. Thank you for this memory.
