Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat uses film, video, and photography to explore issues of gender and identity, with a particular focus on the religious, cultural and political context of Iran.

In 1974, aged 17, Neshat moved from Iran to the United States to study art at the University of California, Berkeley. During her absence, the country underwent significant change, becoming a proclaimed Islamic republic following the 1979 revolution. After 11 years of separation, she returned to her country in 1999 and was struck by the cultural and political changes that had taken place, one significant change being the introduction of laws requiring women to dress in a particular way in public space. This experience led Neshat to explore gender in the context of present-day Iran with the veil becoming a central image in her photographic and video work. Learn more in this short film. 📽️

In 1993, she made her first body of work, a photographic series “Unveiling” and “Women of Allah” that specifically focused on the impact of the revolution on Iranian women. In every work, regardless of its medium, Neshat depicted the women as rebellious, defiant, and resilient despite living under oppressive conditions. 'I believe my art – regardless of its nature – is an expression of protest, a cry for humanity.' - @shirin__neshat 🖤
