Prince knew how to give a profound, provocative acceptance speech. At the 1995 BRIT Awards, he delivered his speech like a beat poem: "Prince. Best? The Gold Experience. Better. In concert. Perfectly free. On record. Slave. Get wild. Come. Peace. Thank you."

At that point in his career, Prince had been publicly embroiled in a dispute with his label, Warner Bros. Records, for over a year, and had changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol. He took the stage with the word SLAVE written on his right cheek.

Though misunderstood by some at the time, Prince's actions would have a lasting influence on the industry. Artists of the modern era are following the paths Prince forged as they fight for ownership of their work. #BlackHistoryMonth
