Prince forged countless paths in his four-decade-long career, opening up new possibilities artistically and professionally. During what he would call his "friction years," his fight for creative agency led him to change his name to a symbol.

"I had to search deep within my heart and spirit, and I wanted to make a change and move to a new plateau in my life," he said in 1999. "And one of the ways that I did that was to change my name. It sort of divorced me from the past, and all the hang-ups that go along with it."

Larry King once asked Prince, "Can you tell us what it signifies?" Holding up his symbol necklace, Prince smiled and said, "Well, me. I've always morphed the female and the male symbol together." #BlackHistoryMonth
