Omiwatari on Lake Suwa
(Okaya City, Suwa City, Shimosuwa Town)

Omiwatari is a natural phenomenon that occurs when Lake Suwa freezes. Sections of ice collide and form a long, raised crack across the lake.

It is said that the Omiwatari is the path left by the male deity of the Suwa Kamisha shrine, who crossed the lake to visit the female deity of the Shimosha shrine.

In recent years, Lake Suwa has not been freezing as often as usual and there have been some winters without any occurrences of Omiwatari at all. It makes us realize just how precious this scenery really is.

*Please do not attempt to walk on the frozen surface of lake as it is very dangerous.

一部がせり上がることで筋になる
自然現象「御神渡り（おみわたり）」❄️

諏訪大社上社の男神が
下社の女神に会いに行った
足跡でもあると言われています🍃

近年は全面結氷する日が減って
御神渡りが起こらない年も増えており
貴重な光景となっています✨
