“I felt that the camera grew an extension of my eyes and moved with me."
One of #IlseBing's best-known photographs—an illusory self-portrait taken in a mirror—seems to illustrate this feeling. The artist directs her Leica camera—and penetrating gaze—both at the viewer and at herself, reflected in the mirrors that provide profile and frontal views of her face.
The small Leica camera that Bing championed revolutionized the way photographers could shoot. When she moved to Paris in 1930, Bing established herself as a prominent avant-garde artist and commercial fashion photographer, bringing her camera with her from the Moulin Rouge to the city streets. She soon came to be known as the “Queen of the Leica.”
