Photo by @nataliekeyssar / Angel David receives communion during an outdoor church service. On Sunday, October 4, hundreds of worshippers gathered at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in New York City's Queens borough. The church holds services throughout the day, most in Spanish and some in English, to accommodate their large following. Attendees waited in line for indoor seating and those who couldn’t fit or didn’t feel safe inside could sit in chairs outside or stand across the street—the sermon was projected on loudspeakers and TVs. The largely South and Central American and Caribbean immigrant population in the region has been very hard hit by the virus and its economic consequences. Many were ill or lost a friend or loved one; many more lost jobs. The economic impact in the community has been compounded by a lack of access to relief funds for the undocumented or people who fear impact on their visa applications if they collect economic aid. As a result, many members of the congregation have struggled with food insecurity.
