Photo by Daniella Zalcman @dzalcman / On Sunday night, news broke that the Cleveland Indians will be changing their name. In 2018, I photographed lifelong Cleveland resident Jim Stamper with some of his massive collection of Chief Wahoo memorabilia—the team logo that has since been retired.

Jim, 66, has been a loyal Indians fan since 1959. He's become a recognizable personality around the ballpark, as he regularly appears at games with larger-than-life cutouts of Chief Wahoo. He, like countless other fans, has continued to appear in Wahoo gear at games in spite of the logo's official retirement in 2018.

Both Wahoo and the team's name have been heavily criticized by Native American activists and their allies for enabling racist caricatures of Indigenous people and culture. The Indians are the second sports franchise in 2020—after the Washington Football Team—to announce a change in their name from one that invokes Native culture.
