"What is this? A temple for ants??" 🐜 🐜 🐜
— Laura Swanson (and a little bit Derek Zoolander)
As part of our #MetAccess program, every month we invite Disabled and Deaf artists to respond to works from the #MetCollection that spark their curiosity or inspire them. Today on #InternationalDayOfPersonsWithDisabilities, contemporary artist @laura.swanson reflects on the role humor plays in understanding the unexpected:
"I am drawn to small versions of things that we are used to seeing large. I am fascinated by the way we often respond with humor when faced with something unexpectedly small.
When I came across this image, I immediately thought of the 'Zoolander' line and the scene in 'Spinal Tap' where a Stonehenge prop is mistakenly made small. I felt compelled to make jokes about it, but at the same time, I am captivated by this image.
I like to think that amusement can be a precursor to recognition. Reacting with humor is not necessarily dismissive, but perhaps part of taking something in."
