Walker is best known for her silhouette figures—a technique developed in the 18th-century and used largely for portraiture—which she employs to challenge narratives of race and sexuality borne out of antebellum stereotypes and prejudices. This 1995 work from her series "Fixin', Pitted, Fished, Pitied" is a life-sized seminal statement in the artist's signature style.
