Photo by @babaktafreshi / A butterfly, a dove, or an angel? This was one of the most beautiful aurora forms I've ever seen, photographed from a Sami village in Lapland, Sweden, on a clear night in March 2012. The Earth's magnetic field forces trapped solar particles to rain down on the atmosphere, causing it to glow over the polar areas. Before modern physics explained the phenomenon, the Sami people believed the northern lights were the energies of departed souls. Some Inuit in Greenland and Arctic Canada have described the aurora as dancing spirits, while Native American cultures called it a fire in the far north, a reminder of Earth's creator. Explore the night sky wonders with me @babaktafreshi.
