Photo by @acacia.johnson / As I sat with my father at the creek where my parents worked as bear guides in the 1980s, this female brown bear descended from the hillside, approaching to within a few meters away. She fished, ate, and napped next to us for hours, completely at peace with our presence.

In Alaska's McNeil State Game Refuge, the world's largest congregations of brown bears have been habituated to coexist with small groups of guided viewers who visit during summer. But these bears are threatened by the proposed Pebble Mine, which could risk poisoning the ecosystem and fracture the habitat the bears need to thrive.

If we truly protect our remaining wilderness and the abundance of land that feeds us all, these kinds of humbling and awe-inspiring encounters can be preserved for generations to come.
