This range is home to the endangered mountain gorilla, listed on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species due to poaching, habitat loss, disease, and war. Lately the numbers of this primate are on the rise, following conservation efforts in the transboundary Virunga Massif, one of the two remaining areas where the great ape is still found.
