Before becoming Vice Chief, Ensley served as a Council Representative for 22 years and has voted “highly and definitively in favor” of the tribe reclaiming lands lost during colonization. “It can be real sensitive having to buy back your own burial grounds,” says Vice Chief Ensley.

In the early 2000s, the tribe swapped land they owned near Waterrock Knob off the Blue Ridge Parkway for land adjacent to the Qualla Boundary, home of the EBCI, that was owned by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The tribe used the newly acquired land to build state of the art K-12 schools for its members.
