Walker plants many of the same crops her ancestors did for thousands of years at Kituwah. “The garden keeps me connected to them,” she says.

Time with Amy is always a gift. Before going into the garden, we sat in her truck, drank coffee, and shared stories of being women and mothers. A cultural tradition, Amy’s hair is cut short to symbolize the grief she’s experiencing after losing her youngest daughter to ovarian cancer.

In the Great Smoky Mountains, the EBCI is reclaiming culturally and historically important lands lost during colonization. Kituwah was reclaimed by the tribe in 1996 after losing ownership of it in the early 1800s.
