Photos by @nicholesobecki / Many historians believe that the Red Sea port of Suakin was likely Ptolemy's Port of Good Hope, Limen Evangelis, which is similarly described as lying on a circular island at the end of a long inlet. For 3,000 year it remained strategically important to an array of empires, bringing great riches to the shores of Sudan, before falling to disrepair in the 20th century. Wandering the ancient site on a Friday afternoon, it was beautiful to see the community just beyond its gates coming here to bask in their own history, gaze out at the sea, and scramble over the coral ruins. #sudan #history #identity
