Photo by @iantehphotography Hong Kong, circa 2013. Over the decades, I’ve visited this island a handful of times, and the most memorable was 1998, just one year after Britain handed over the island to China. It seemed to bubble with a sense of optimism, a can-do spirit that continued almost seamlessly into a new era of rule under a different government. I was struck by its verticality then, an aspect that described the city’s dynamism perfectly—seen from the waters that surrounded the island, that characteristic became even more pronounced. One month ago, a barge draped with large red banners celebrating China’s new security law sailed across Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor, only hours after the legislation passed. The police hoisted a purple sign as a warning to pro-democracy protesters that their chants could be criminal. After a year of unrest and defiant protests on the streets, major roads throughout the city were now filled with colorful flags hailing a new age of stability and prosperity. Times have certainly changed for this island; almost overnight seven million people are now left to navigate what this new law means to their lives.
