I used to be self-conscious about wearing my hair in braids. It didn’t help that I would get comments about it. Some that are ignorant and some that exotify. There’s one particular instance that I remember from a few years ago. I was traveling for work and I was rushing from one gate to catch my connecting flight. As I was hurrying, I heard a voice say “how” - the white interpretation of a Lakota greeting, háu. One of the stereotypical greetings some people associate with all Native peoples in part because of years of racist and monolithic portrayals of Native & Indigenous peoples in movies, literature, images, etc. It was the kind of thing that happened so fast that it took time to process what happened. It also wasn’t something I had the energy or time to respond to, but it made me angry. Though it’s taken some time to get here, I love and appreciate my trenzas. I wear them in part as an act of cultural resistance that allows me to more fully love myself.
