#GagosianSpotlight: “Bodies fascinate me. I find having the framework of a body essential. Having flesh as a central subject, I can channel a lot of ideas.”
—Jenny Saville
In her charcoal drawings, Jenny Saville channels the enigmatic softness and subtle perspectival trickery of Leonardo da Vinci’s cartoons. Open and palimpsestic, “Thread,” for example, features a pyramid of nude figures intertwined to the point of corporeal dissolution. Limbs hyperextend across the composition and torsos flicker between foreground and background, creating a knotted mass of bodies united by Saville’s free-flowing line.
