On the occasion of her fiftieth birthday, and inspired by her experience in a time of quarantine, Saville has created “Virtual,” a new oil-on-canvas self-portrait whose imagery looks to past and present in equal measure. Perched at the tipping point between realism and abstraction, this work registers a visual slippage, reflecting the multivalent images and identities inherent to an image-saturated world in which the real and the virtual maintain an uneasy coexistence.
