“This map of American violence is incomplete. Please write in whatever you find lacking.”

Across every state in #FaithRinggold’s “United States of Attica,” her most widely distributed political poster of the 1970s, the artist recorded riots, murders, wars, and other violent, often racist, atrocities, inviting viewers to fill in the gaps. In place of the traditional red, white, and blue, Ringgold colored her map red and green, a nod to Marcus Garvey’s Black Nationalist Flag.

The work’s poignant reflection on violence in American culture takes its title from a bloody riot at the Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York in September 1971. After a four-day takeover by inmates demanding better conditions, police stormed the facility, and 43 people—prisoners, guards, and civilians—were killed.
