Photos by Daniella Zalcman @dzalcman | In honor of Juneteenth, which celebrates the end of slavery in the United States, I'm sharing some photos from Artist Dread Scott’s slave rebellion reenactment. Last November, hundreds of reenactors—including Karen Kaia Livers and Jordan Rome, seen here—participated in a staging of the 1811 German Coast Uprising, the largest revolt of enslaved people in U.S. history. Participants marched 20 miles along the east coast of the Mississippi River, past former plantations and chemical refineries, to finally end in New Orleans' Congo Square. “You can’t understand America if you don’t understand slavery,” said Dread Scott (the artist's professional name, after Dred Scott). “And you can’t understand slavery if you don’t know that slave revolts were constant.”
