On August 19, 1958, members of the NAACP Youth Council occupied seats at the Katz Drug Store lunch counter in downtown Oklahoma City and politely asked to be served. When denied service, the students remained seated in a peaceful protest. After three days of the student sit-in, the management of Katz Drug Store agreed to serve them and it became an integrated lunch counter.
Clara Luper, a teacher and a Civil Rights leader, knew the power young people held as she advised the advisor for the Oklahoma City NAACP Youth Council. The Youth Council continued to conduct sit-ins throughout the early 1960s, helping to end segregation in public accommodations in Oklahoma.
