Photo by @acacia.johnson | Visitors observe brown bears grazing on sedge grass in Chinitna Bay, in Alaska's Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. Only a short flight from Anchorage by bush plane, Chinitna is one of Alaska's most scenic places for wildlife enthusiasts to watch wild brown bears forage on grass, fish for salmon, and dig for clams. But the bears, and their ecosystem, are threatened by the proposed Pebble Mine, an open-pit gold and copper mine that would risk poisoning the water table and involve a sprawling transportation corridor within these bears' wandering ranges–both fracturing their habitat and putting their lives at risk.
