"It is so sad that it takes so long for people to understand what needs to happen in order to be free.” ⁣⁣
— Faith Ringgold⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
In "Freedom of Speech," #FaithRinggold interprets the meaning of the U.S. Constitution's Bill of Rights as it applies to the civil rights of all people. Across the red stripes of the American flag, Ringgold writes the words of the First Amendment protecting freedom of speech, the right to religious practice, peaceable assembly, and lawful redress of grievances.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
In opposition to these noble ideals, however, Ringgold writes an array of names and words over the white stripes and stars that reference serious breaches of these freedoms. ⁣⁣This juxtaposition serves as a sobering reminder of the complex histories that have built, shaped, and continue to define what it means to exist freely in America.⁣⁣⁣⁣

The Met stands in solidarity with the Black community. We see you, we are listening, we support you. We call for justice.⁣
