Photo by David Guttenfelder @dguttenfelder | In 2019, 40 years after the partial meltdown of a reactor at Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station—America’s worst nuclear accident— the plant closed for good. Nuclear plants are expensive to build and run but generate carbon-free electricity around the clock. They currently provide nearly 20 percent of the country’s supply.
I crossed the United States in an electric car with writer @craigwelch to try to understand the future of energy for our story "The Road to 2070." Please have a look at the April 2020 issue of National Geographic, which marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.
