Photo by @maggiesteber | A northern curly tail lizard rests on a tree branch in my garden on Sunday in Miami. I call this six-inch lizard HelloBaby because I’m not sure of the gender, but it does an odd movement that looks like a mating dance. I began a self-imposed quarantine in response to COVID-19 after having a low fever several days ago. I'm keeping a daily visual and written diary about the experience of this solitude. One of the most delightful things is that HelloBaby comes to visit me every day around the same time. I dig for bugs in the garden and throw them to the lizard, which gobbles them right up and looks to me for more. I call its name in a high-tone voice, and I sing to it as it tilts its head, seemingly to listen. Being someone who is a bit older—although a younger older—I didn’t want to take chances of being infected or infecting someone else in case I have the virus. In the meantime I’m taking advantage of this break in daily life to catch up on work. My favorite thing is that it gives me time to reconnect with nature, and the surprise and beauty of small things and moments. More important, I have to stop and consider the deeper meaning of this worldwide pandemic. This is a far-reaching event that goes beyond the virus and should make us pay attention to what nature can deliver to us when we do not respect it, despite the signals.
