Each year, on January 2nd, the grounds of the Imperial Palace are opened to the public to receive New Years greeting from the Japanese Emperor. It's become a kind of a tradition for me to go. Tradition is often associated with older generations, but it's up to the young to adopt and adapt the rituals that create and protect culture - as the young guard on horseback here protects the Imperial Palace.
