The land is protected by the Tennessee River Gorge Trust, the state of Tennessee, and the Tennessee Valley Authority. A mature forest like this also acts as an effective carbon sink. In 2017 the Tennessee River Gorge Trust placed 6,000 acres of its land in the carbon offset market, locking up over 225,000 metric tons of carbon. // According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Climate Change and Land, the loss of healthy forests is a key cause of climate change.
