Photo by David Guttenfelder @dguttenfelder | A raptor is tethered to the hood of a truck to serve as a trapper’s spotter in Egypt's Western Desert. When the bird spies a falcon, it looks up, alerting the trapper to release a small bird wearing a snare, trapping the falcon if it comes in for the kill. Falconers pay up to $35,000 for a live falcon. To see more from this story, check out "The Last Song for Migrating Birds," originally published in the July 2013 issue of @ナショナルジオグラフィック.

@t_a_r_y_n__ it maybe that funny_plate_usa was simply using the definition of the word, “exploit.” One meaning is to use productively, and we certainly do that with service animals, working breeds, and companion animals. The meaning that is often implied by exploit, that the use is mean or cruel, may or may not apply to falconers. This post does nothing to show the conditions of the falcons after they are sold. However, I find it hard to believe that a $35k pet would be abused, though this is a statement of assumption and not based on evidence or fact. However, it is technically correct that we exploit our pets to our practical purposes be they companionship, pest control, or protection. That would apply regardless of how said species were domesticated.

I see the cruelty in this concept and many people have expressed comments of sadness and outrage here. There is exploitation of animals by every culture on the planet to some degree. None worse than factory farmed meat, dairy and eggs. If everyone outraged by this image examined their own lives and changed the way they eat, think about the suffering that would cease. We are all guilty but readily willing to judge others.

Great informative post. While some dont agree with the content, animals all over the world have been used for hunting in different ways. And in some places for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. It's all relative in the larger scope of time. Humans are laying waste to the entire planet. Stopping Falconry is not going to save it.

@alexiusalexius my thoughts are that given a choice I do not believe a wild bird would choose to live with humans. Whereas a dog would and enjoys having jobs and working for humans. Do you see many self sufficient dogs in the wild living comfortably? No, they need people. Wild animals do not.

@libraszki well you're obviously not a falconer, nor do you appreciate how much some people put into the hobby, almost every falconer ive met, online or otherwise, loved their birds more than anything else.
