This is a cell phone photo from the final hours of the final day of an expedition, as I found myself as the sole human above 8,000 meters—a solitude that's presumably akin to what was experienced during the early 1920s expeditions but nearly impossible today. There was a serenity in this moment that transcended the trash all around me, a deep appreciation for the pull of this place and the spirit of exploration it represents. janevanwyk Co-incidentally I was watching a documentary on Nat Geo of 'above & beyond' Mt. Everest. It brought to my mind the question of how difficult it might have been for previous mountaineers and climbers in years long before today's technology and modern equipment. Interesting though is that assistance is more at the order of the day than previous years. It would be interesting to know how one compares safety then with today's modern equipment & technology available where deaths and accidents still occurs during Mnt Everest's attempts.
