During the summer of 2004, I worked on my master's in ecology in Svalbard, where I was able to spend time around an Arctic fox den. And even though my window of opportunity was small, it changed my life. Arctic foxes mate between February and May, with births taking place from April to July. The young are born and nursed inside complex dens, which provide shelter and protection against predators. After three weeks, the young start leaving the den to explore the surroundings—and luckily I arrived just as six little fur balls had emerged from the den. They spent 30 minutes playing in the midnight sun before they started to get sleepy again and headed back to their den. Upon my return to the Netherlands I entered the images in a photography competition, and to my surprise I was the overall winner. I never finished my degree and decided to dedicate my life to tell stories about the beauty and fragility of the natural world.
