Ancient wildlife paths to the vast Mkgadikgadi Pans were blocked by cattle fences in the 1960s, and a massive migration of zebras and wildebeest was lost. Recently, however, a fence was dropped, and despite the fact that no zebra alive would have previously walked this route, the migration was revived. Researchers believe that these important migratory routes are somehow genetically encoded and are working to discover the mechanisms behind it. But this does show us how much we don’t know, and how important historical migratory routes are. This World Environment Day it is certainly worthwhile assessing other fences and the impact (positive or negative) that they may be having. This is especially relevant now, as the Botswana government has announced that it will be closing numerous migratory routes in a bid to curb elephant movement. #WorldEnvironmentDay #makgadikgadi #zebramigration #ancientwildliferoutes #botswana」6月5日 15時39分 - natgeo
