“This is American Bison” reads the caption this drawing, believed to be drawn by a Sioux artist in the 1890s—a time when bison where were being killed at alarming rates by hunters travelling on the newly completed Transcontinental Railroad.
The Transcontinental Railroad fundamentally changed the American West, forever altering life for the people that lived there. Its trains brought hunters who killed the bison Native peoples relied on for food and rituals and settlers moving westward. The U.S. government forced Native peoples to sign treaties ceding their lands or granting settlers safe passage.
Lakota, Cheyenne and other tribes fiercely resisted the railroad as it encroached on indigenous communities.
Other nations interacted with the railroad (and the companies and government forces backing the railroad) differently. For instance, the Pawnee worked with the railroad, seeing benefits to the partnership.
