This page comes from a copy of the Koran completed in the early 13th century. Records indicate that it took a scribe 22 years to create the entire book. In the Islamic tradition, representations of human or animal figures are discouraged, resulting in a fluid calligraphic style often incorporating geometric and floral designs. On this page, the black letters are in Arabic and the smaller red letters are in Persian. The page was donated to the Smithsonian Institution after the 13th century Koran was discovered in 1952.
