For "The Anthropophagic Effect," artist Jeffrey Gibson produced a new series of garments and helmets employing techniques such as Southeastern river cane basket weaving, Algonquian birch bark biting, and porcupine quillwork—crafts practiced by Indigenous tribes since before the arrival of European settlers. Over the course of the exhibition, these works will by activated with performances and staged photo shoots in the Fifth Floor Gallery. We went to the moon nearly fifty years ago to this date. And our greatest discovery was the Earth. For some reason we have yet to brave the depths of our oceans to find out what truly lives in the deep. Let alone learn to take care of our planet and each other. We only have the brain and oceans left as uncharted places of exploration. What do you see when you see my artwork? @chas_prange
