In November 2012, 39 Congolese soldiers were accused of raping an estimated 1,000 women, children, and men in the town of Minova. The attacks happened as the soldiers, members of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC), were fleeing the rebels of the March 23 Movement (M23), which had gained control of the eastern city of Goma. Though only 47 rape survivors testified, and few of the soldiers were convicted, the trial was seen as an unprecedented success in a country plagued by corruption. I was hired to film the Minova rape trial for "The Prosecutors (2018), a feature-length documentary about three dedicated lawyers who fight to ensure that rape in war is not met with impunity. Filmed over five years on three continents, it takes viewers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Bosnia and Herzegovina to Colombia on the long journey toward justice.
