One day, aircraft could fly up to 5 times faster than the speed of sound. Flights between London and Australia would take just 4.5 hours.
But for that to be possible, engines need to be able to process extremely hot air flows.
UK-based company Reaction Engines said its precooler component, which is designed to manage extreme heat, has successfully handled temperatures of 420 degrees Celsius. Its CEO said the results were unparalleled and a "hugely significant milestone."
