After 25 years of power, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AK Party) has lost the capital Ankara. The AK party also looks likely to lose Istanbul as Sunday's municipal election results — largely seen as a referendum on the president himself — roll in.
Given that most voters went to the polls with the economy on their minds, the results shouldn't take anyone by surprise, one expert said.
The Turkish lira fell sharply Monday, following a turbulent week.
