For years, there’s been a lot holding investors back from renewable energy: small deals, long development timelines and risky bets on new technology. But as interest in old-school energy wanes, both wealthy individuals and financial institutions are looking at clean-tech ventures in a new light.
Dozens of wealthy investors — including Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Jack Ma — launched a $1 billion fund to invest in companies focused on renewable energy. The firm, called Breakthrough Energy Ventures, promises “patient capital.” Its goal is to get new technologies to market, rather than emphasizing short-term returns.
