Besides the active Nyiragongo Volcano just eight miles to the north, the recent history of Goma has been dominated by the aftermath events of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, beginning with the First and Second Congo Wars and followed by other numerous outbreaks of violence since that have resulted in millions of deaths. This insecurity has, just in North Kivu alone, resulted in the development of well over 100 armed groups.
