Photo by @jasperdoest | In 2004 I spent the summer working on my master's degree in Svalbard, high up in the Arctic. Little did I know that this summer would jumpstart a career in photography. During a field trip, we briefly visited a research station known to have an Arctic fox den nearby. Even though it was drizzling, I wanted to see if I had a chance to glimpse and photograph the foxes—I didn't care too much about the rest of the station visit. After having waited for 3.5 hours and with the ship about to leave, the sun finally came through—and six little fox kits came out of the den to explore the Arctic tundra.
While I never had published a single image, I entered the images in the professional category of a Dutch nature-photography competition, which, to my surprise, awarded me as the overall contest winner. I never finished my master's degree; I decided to dedicate my life to telling stories about the beauty and fragility of the natural world.
