India is facing an epidemic of blindness due to diabetic eye conditions — now Google and sister-company Verily are trying to use technology to stop it.
The two companies are teaming up on a project to screen medical imagining for two diabetic eye conditions: diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. These afflictions impact millions of people worldwide.
After years of research, Google and Verily have approval from European regulators to use the technology in the field.
Similar algorithms are used in the U.S. to help doctors sort through images and prioritize patients who may need a diagnosis. But in countries with less regulation and even less doctors — like India, for example — there’s potential for the technology to make the actual diagnosis itself.
