Photo by @adamfergusonstudio | In early 2018 the Trump Administration announced that, in September 2019, it would end the "temporary protected status" provided to over 200,000 Salvadorians who currently live and work legally in the U.S. Ana Machado, 53, and her daughter, Kenia Gaitan, 29, sit with Gaitan’s three children, Jakob, three, Bridget, six, and Aviela, nine, in their Virginia apartment. Machado came to the U.S. in 1991 as a civil war refugee and was only recently granted political asylum. She works as an office cleaner. Gaitan, who arrived in 2006 after threats from MS-13, is undocumented, but her children are U.S. citizens.
