Today marks the birthday of Andrea Y. Motley Crabtree, the first female U.S. Army deep sea diver, who is depicted in this portrait by Los Angeles-based artist Henry Taylor. The painting is based on a photograph taken in 1982 at the U.S. Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center in Panama City, Florida. While Crabtree wears a standard diving costume, the rich, dark backdrop as well as her seated posture aligns her with the often regal subjects of Old Master painting. Commemorating this important figure in American female military while emphasizing the honor and prestige that African Americans have garnered makes this a particularly poignant and moving likeness. #BlackHistoryMonth #HenryTaylor #TheMet #MetModern ⁣
