On February 20, 1872, The Met opened its doors to the public for the first time. When the Museum was founded in 1870, it had no building and no artwork, but the institution's Trustees moved quickly to assemble the nucleus of its art collection. Two years later, The Met secured its first exhibition space at the Dodworth Building on Fifth Avenue between 53rd and 54th Streets. The Met opened its first building in Central Park in 1880, where we have remained to this day. This photo from ca. 1888 shows the Museum as it appeared before the addition of our now iconic, Richard Morris Hunt-designed façade in 1902. #TheMet #onthisday
