“African American Flag” (1990) is a new addition to #TheLongRunMoMA’s David Hammons gallery showcasing his consistent experimentation with a wide range of materials. Evoking the U.S. flag and the Pan-African flag adopted by Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL), the work reflects the artist’s career-long exploration of American identity in all of its complexity—its history, its representations, and its possibilities.
