Photo by Michaela Skovranova @mishkusk | Researchers in Australia have found that corals commonly found on the Great Barrier Reef consume microplastic pollution. These beautiful creatures, which first appeared in this planet over 500 million years ago, are now unfortunately supplementing their diet with indigestible plastic.
Our environments are deeply interconnected. Land and ocean are connected through waterways, and our ability to have a positive impact on our ecosystem cannot be underestimated.
As humans we have a wonderful opportunity to help. We can now choose plastic-free alternatives, join and support clean-up initiatives, and push for change in our local area with city and business councils. We can collect a few pieces of debris on our walks and encourage positive conversations about conscious use of plastic. No matter how big or small, every little bit of marine debris removed from the ecosystem helps.
