Linda Goode Bryant founded Just Above Midtown Gallery (JAM) in 1974 in response to a growing need for commercial representation for Black contemporary artists who were creating new, experimental work. David Hammons used greasy bags and Black hair as his medium, Senga Nengudi stretched pantyhose into sculpture, and Lorraine O’Grady involved an entire parade in her performance “Art Is …”. By exhibiting such works, JAM dispelled preconceived notions of what Black art could be. #SoulofaNationBKM ends Feb 3.
