Photo by Daniella Zalcman @dzalcman | Last night, Deb Haaland @deb4congressnm (pictured in her campaign office) and Sharice Davids @shariceforcongress became the first Native American women elected to Congress. Haaland (Laguna Pueblo) will represent New Mexico's 1st District and Davids (Ho-Chunk) will represent Kansas' 3rd District. Since 1789, 10,947 individual Representatives have served in the House — and not a single person has been an Indigenous woman (there have been 16 Native Congressmen). Deb is featured in the upcoming Nat Geo story on Native Americans reframing their identity in the December issue of the magazine.
Editors Note: The original caption also declared Yvette Herrell as winning her race. She ultimately lost her race by a slim margin.
